The safe zone is not a number, and the pixel guides know it
TikTok says the safe zone shrinks as the caption gets longer. Meta's page returns HTTP 400 without a login. The exact pixel guides disagree by 350 pixels.
TikTok publishes its safe zone as a zip file. Download the In-Feed with Anchor template from its own reservation in-feed ad specifications and there are four versions of the same rectangle, one per number of lines in the ad caption: measured off the artwork and scaled to the 1080 by 1920 frame everybody quotes, the usable band is 856 pixels tall with one line of copy and 654 with four. That is 202 pixels of picture that stop being safe because a copywriter wrote a longer caption. Three TikTok help pages state the rule in prose. None prints a pixel offset, because there is not one to print. Every exact pixel guide in the search results does.
Three TikTok pages say the safe zone is a function, not a rectangle
The reservation in-feed specification puts it in one sentence: the safe zone size is determined by the dimension, vertical, horizontal or square, the ad caption length and any interactive add-on usage, and the longer the caption, the smaller the safe zone will be. The auction in-feed page says it again, naming the dimension, the caption length and any additional formats used. The Download Card page says it a third way and adds the consequence: an element outside the safe zone may be covered or cropped.
Three wordings, so this is not a typo on one page. What all three hand you instead of a number is a download, four on the in-feed page alone: In-Feed Standard Version LTR at 84.29 KB, In-Feed with Anchor at 3.83 MB, and the two Arabic right to left equivalents. The safe zone arrives as artwork because it is not the same shape twice.
The vertical dimension TikTok asks for is 9:16 at 540 by 960 pixels or larger, and the artwork on that page is drawn at 720 by 1280 in one download and 540 by 960 in the other. No 1080 and no 1920 appears on it. Every circulating guide quotes offsets against 1080 by 1920, which is nobody's published frame.
A line of caption costs 66 pixels, and TopView loses 420 in three seconds
The anchor template is twelve PNGs in three folders dated 27 July 2021, and an instruction file that explains the set in two lines: the four versions of in-feed safe zone show how safe zone varied when clients provide different lines of copy. Measured off the safe region in each, the top offset never moves: 126 pixels in all four. The bottom offset goes 406, 439, 473, 507, so the floor rises by 33 or 34 pixels per line, 66 to 68 at 1080 by 1920.
TopView moves the floor on a timer instead. Its template is four PNGs dated 15 October 2025, split into an initial and an after three second phase, and the artwork prints its own offsets: 160 top and 160 bottom for the first three seconds, 160 top and 440 bottom after. The band is 960 pixels tall, then 680. At 1080 by 1920 that is 1,440 falling to 1,020, so the band loses 420 pixels, 29 per cent of itself, three seconds into the same ad.
TikTok prints the comparison itself, in a one line note: in-feed safe zone is more restrictive than open screen. One placement has two safe zones by stage, another four by caption length, both ship separate artwork for right to left languages, and the caption block is two sizes on the same surface: a Spark Ad shows up to four lines, a non Spark Ad one line of at most 20 characters.
Within one ad format the safe zone is two different rectangles at two different times, and TikTok publishes both, as artwork, in a zip.
The five upper rows were measured pixel by pixel out of the safe zone artwork TikTok publishes on its own ad specification pages, then scaled to 1080 by 1920. The lower three are the offsets published by third party guides. Each band runs from the claimed top offset to 1920 minus the claimed bottom offset, so the length of the bar is the height a designer is being told is usable.
The exact pixel guides disagree by 350 pixels at the bottom of the same frame
Search for a safe zone and the pages that come back are titled Exact Pixel Guide and Pixel Specs. Outfy says leave 108 pixels at the top and 320 at the bottom of a Reel. Lucid Media gives the same placement as 270 and 670. A gap of 162 pixels at the top and 350 at the bottom, and a usable band of 1,492 pixels in one guide against 980 in the other.
Lucid Media and 1clickreport agree exactly, to the pixel and to the bracketed percentage: 270 or 14 per cent at the top, 670 or 35 per cent at the bottom, 65 or 6 per cent each side. House of Marketers gives the same claim as approximately 14 and 35 per cent, which on a 1920 pixel frame is 268.8 and 672. That is where the 269 and 672 pair in circulation comes from: one assertion, three spellings, and the percentage is the original.
TikTok's guides are no closer to each other. EzUGC publishes 130 at the top and 484 at the bottom. AdCheckLab publishes 200 and 334 for organic posts and 200 and 450 for ads, the only one in the set to separate paid from organic. Three guides, three incompatible floors, and none of them lands on the 660, 812, 878, 946 or 1014 that TikTok's own artwork gives at that frame size.
Every primary source those guides point at is an error page, a dead article or a URL marked old
The Meta Business Help Centre article on text overlays and the safe zone in Stories and Reels is the one citation three of these guides share. It answers HTTP 400. The response is 1,542 bytes, its head carries the title Error and a robots noindex, and the whole of its visible text reads: Error. Sorry, something went wrong. The article exists: another client got its title out, in Dutch. It serves no specification to anybody not signed in.
It is not one broken article. The Instagram Help Centre page on supported photo and video dimensions returns the identical 1,542 byte error page, same status, same body, and it is the only platform link on the guide publishing 108 and 320. TikTok fails worse. The article EzUGC names as its authority answers HTTP 200 with a page of 1.5 megabytes whose entire article content reads: Sorry! The article you are looking for no longer exists or failed to load. A link checker passes it.
X went backwards. Its only page that ever carried anything like a safe zone sits at a URL ending creative-ad-specifications-old, answers 200 to curl and HTTP 402 Payment Required to another client, and publishes interface bar sizes rather than a safe zone: bottom menu 1125 by 250 on iOS against 1080 by 80 on Android. The unit's maximum resolution is 1080 by 1920, so no 1125 is in the coordinate system of the file you upload. On the current page 1125 occurs zero times.
LinkedIn and YouTube abstain rather than fail. LinkedIn specifies its video in encoding terms alone, 256 by 144 up to 4096 by 2304, aspect ratios from 1:2.4 to 2.4:1, and says nothing about where its own interface sits. YouTube's resolution page carries the words safe zone, safe area, title safe and action safe zero times: its position is that the player will automatically change to the ideal size to match your video and the viewer's device.
The one body that defines a safe area publishes a percentage, and still printed the wrong pixels for months
The term comes from television. EBU R 95, Safe areas for 16:9 television production, first issued in 1999 and at Version 1.1 since June 2017, is the only document in this subject from a standards body. It defines two areas rather than one: all essential action inside an action safe area, all graphics inside a graphics safe area, at 3.5 per cent and 5 per cent of the image.
Note 1 is the sentence to take from it. The definitions are given in lines and pixels because those are now more definitive than the percentages used previously, and the percentages are kept anyway because they are the basis on which comparisons may be made. Then footnote 1: in March 2016 the EBU corrected its own figures, because 3.5 per cent of a 16:9 raster had been misquoted as 76 pixels instead of the correct 67.
A committee working on a raster that does not move, revising one recommendation across 1999, 2000, 2008, 2015, 2016 and 2017, printed the wrong pixel count for a percentage it had defined itself. The guides are quoting bare pixels for an interface whose own artwork was redrawn between July 2021 and October 2025.
The one standards body that defines a safe area derives its pixels from a percentage, and still printed the wrong number for months.
We compose inside 654 pixels, the smallest band anybody has measured
Pipeline Video composes its motion graphics as HTML and CSS, so the safe area is a number somebody has to write into a stylesheet. In this repository it is not a pixel offset: vertical lengths are written against a 1080 tall reference frame and re-measured by height, so a caption a seventh of the way up stays a seventh of the way up at 1080 by 1920. The reason written beside that code is portrait video rather than TikTok's caption block. It is the unit this problem needs anyway.
What no layout here can see is the caption. It is typed after the render, often by somebody who never saw the frame, and 66 to 68 pixels of the floor move with it. So the reserve is the four line case: 654 pixels of a 1920 pixel frame, the smallest band in any file TikTok publishes. Compose inside that and every other case is slack. Compose inside the 1,492 pixel band the most generous guide asserts and all five platform measurements clip it: four at the floor, every one at the top.

What to do about it
- Download the safe zone artwork from the platform's own ad specification page and measure it, rather than quoting a pixel offset from a guide that cites an error page.
- Compose inside the smallest band you measured, 654 pixels of a 1920 pixel frame for TikTok's own templates, and settle the caption length before the layout is drawn.
- Store the reserve as a fraction of the frame with the date of the artwork it came from, so the next interface change shows up as a stale file rather than a clipped video.
